What is Safe Sound Protocol? (SSP)
Example: Many of us have experienced the booming of the bass from a car radio and the difficulties we have hearing vocal tracks or understanding when someone in the car is talking to us. Once the bass is turned up, the low frequencies trigger our hypervigilance as our body associates the low frequencies with potential threat. For those with weaker middle ear muscles, vacuum cleaners, ventilation systems, escalators, traffic, airplanes, and even elevators can be perceived as being loud and painful.

Our Process
The SSP is a portal to the Social Engagement System which can powerfully affect how your child interacts with you and the world. Resulting new behaviors reflect an increased sense of safety in the world, but they are fragile and can be disrupted if not recognized and responded to in a positive manner. Essentially, the SSP is opening the system for greater engagement. What comes after the SSP can cement and extend the gains. It is the repeated and consistent responses from the people around your child that will enhance the new sense of safety and reinforce the new behavior.

At Safe Sound Pediatric Therapy, the whole team works to address the multifaceted aspects of development. The instant familiarity of the surroundings leads to a reduction in stress. It helps families feel like they belong in the space. To further reduce stress, retrain the auditory system, and facilitate social engagement, a 5-day intervention delivered through headphones is used, it is known as the Safe and Sound Protocol. By starting at the level of social interaction, we see significant changes in children that affect aspects of everyday life.
