safe sound protocol
What can I expect?
The Safe and Sound Protocol is administered for the length of 1 hour over the course of 5 consecutive days. During each session, your child will be listening to music through headphones. Similar to a workout, your child’s ears may appear reddened or hot following the treatment, this is a result of increased blood flow to the ears. Some caregivers have reported increased levels of fatigue during the week and more trips to the bathroom as a result of the body returning to a relaxed state.

What to look for after completing the SSP?

01. Look
You may notice your child making more eye contact with you, family, friends, and teachers. Eye contact is a sign that your child is feeling safe and receptive to social behavior. It should not be forced but when you see it, respond with a smile and encouragement. Reciprocal eye contact and smiles will help the child identify other “safe” people that are part of a “safe” environment where the child can relax and be friendly and loving.
02. Listen
Look for improvements in listening behavior. You may not have to repeat yourself when you ask a question or make a request of your child. Your child may stop complaining about loud noises or stop covering their ears when loud noises occur. By completing the Safe and Sound Protocol, your child’s ear muscles are now better able to “ignore” loud noises, and allow them to focus on speech instead.
03. Regulate
Better emotional control and accurate facial expressions will indicate better regulation. Temper tantrums and outbursts are typically a sign of dysregulation, or uncontrollable feelings. Temper tantrums can occur for a lot of reasons, some of which are addressed by the Safe and Sound Protocol. For example, some children will tantrum when their desires aren’t honored immediately. These feelings may be calmed and coupled with better eye contact and listening skills. As a result they are able to participate in reciprocal conversation when negotiating decisions with friends and family.
04. Play
Play involves reciprocal interactions and communication between children. Safe and Sound Protocol facilitates marked improvements in play behavior. Children use increased eye contact and attend for longer periods of time with a single conversation with improved turn taking. Now would be a good time to encourage a more active role in playdates or sibling play so you can support the interaction.
